Do
Your Lifeguards Look Like This?
(If your answer is "yes", you
just might need our help...)
Swimming
began in the First Century A.D. Even Egyptians adored swimming! They even made
a hieroglyph for swimming that dates back to 2500 A.D. Just because swimming was
adored all the way back in the First Century, it doesn't mean it was loved all
through the centuries to our time. During the Middle Ages, people feared water
because they thought water contained diseases and if they swam in the water, they
thought they might become sick. So, sadly swimming was not appreciated until the
nineteenth century when it became popular again in England. People felt they could
finally trust the water to be free of disease.
Swimming
started when someone fell in the water and moved around like a maniac in the water.
The movements are called dog paddle because the strokes look like a dog paddling
in the water.
Even
though the Egyptians made a hieroglyph for swimming very early in time (2500 A.D.),
Japan made the sport very popular through swimming contests that were regularly
held.
Today
swimming is an important sport and joins other sports in popularity, such as walking,
jogging, running, and bicycling.
Swimming
has been part of the Olympics since 1896 and continues to be as popular as ever.
